Is your group missing?
The groups below are labeled to show whether they use, study, teach or develop technologies for citizen science methods.
Inclusive Citizen Science
Stockholm Environment Institute, York, University of York
SEI York’s citizen science research group, established in 2008, led by Professor Sarah West and currently with sixteen members. Our work sits at the intersection of citizen science, environmental sustainability, and inclusive practice. We research, use and improve best practice in citizen science and inclusive engagement for environmental sustainability.
Use Study Teach
Extreme Citizen Science (ExCiteS)
University College London (UCL)
The Extreme Citizen Science group (ExCiteS) brings together a diverse range of experts who create methodologies, tools, and guiding theories to help communities start their own Citizen Science projects. We provide every user, regardless of background or literacy level, with tools to collect, analyse, and act on information using agreed-upon scientific methods. The group links about 10 researchers at different stages of their career.
Use Study Teach Technologies
Digital Participation, Social Justice and Equitable Learning
Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University UK
The Digital Participation, Social Justice and Equitable Learning programme explores how communities can meaningfully engage with scientific research using innovative learning technologies, citizen inquiry, and co-production. Empowering this participation develops critical literacies and individual agency, drives positive community change, and produces robust evidence to effectively influence future policy and practice.
Use Study Technologies
Innovation team
Earthwatch Europe
The innovation team works on the “science of citizen science”, developing new approaches to citizen science in environmental research. The team of seven researchers is currently active across eight Horizon Europe projects looking at topics ranging from impact assessment, upscaling, ocean and water literacy, soil health, and the circular economy.
Use Study Technologies
Felixstowe Citizen Science Group
The Felixstowe Citizen Science Group was founded in April 2018. We have 36 members. Our primary focus is impact analysis on the work of our local community nature reserve. However, we do a lot of supplementary work e.g. investigating local climate activism and therapeutic environments.
Use
Born in Bradford Centre for Social Change
University of York and Born in Bradford
The Born in Bradford Centre for Social Change is a collaborative initiative between the world leading research programme Born in Bradford (BiB), the Healthy Livelihoods team within Health Sciences at York and The York Policy Engine (TYPE).
Use
UCL Spatial Cognition Group
University College London (UCL)
6 members.
Use
Rapid Eczema Trials
University of Nottingham
We use a citizen science approach to design, develop and deliver randomised controlled trials testing eczema self-management strategies. Our project is governed by three citizen science principles: it should be inclusive, offer benefit to citizens, and not compromise scientific rigour. We have around 1,300 members in our citizen science community.
Use
ASO (observatory) & Almions Innovations (implementation arm of ASO)
We focus on environmental resilience research in urban and sub-urban areas, with local citizens providing us with multi domain field insights. We have a team of upto 10 people.
Use
A website set up to encourage connections and collaborations between citizen scientists across the UK, and with colleagues within European Citizen Science.
Use
UK Tree Health Citizen Science Network (THCSN)
The aim of the network is for all key organisations / individuals interested in tree health and citizen science to:
work collaboratively to share information, news, experiences and best practice
pursue opportunities for joint working and funding
act as ambassadors both nationally and internationally
provide counsel and advice to policy-makers
Use Study Technologies
A group of professionals and citizen scientists working to engage people with biological recording across the UK and beyond.
Use
Earthwatch Europe is an environmental charity and Independent Research Organisation based in Oxford, UK. Earthwatch has been delivering environmental citizen science for over 50 years and currently runs large citizen science programmes including FreshWater Watch and Tiny Forest. Earthwatch also has an active education team and promotes the use of citizen science in schools and by early career researchers.
Use Study Teach Technologies
Glasgow Citizen Science Volunteer Group
The Conservation Volunteers
This group meets every week to carry out biological surveying and recording across Glasgow and further afield. This will give you experience in carrying out biological surveys, allow you to take part in Citizen Science projects, and gain native species identification skills. Surveys include: WeBS, BeeWalk, Deadwood, Air Quality.
Teach
The Buzz Club
University of Sussex
A citizen science non-profit, run out of the University of Sussex, and directed by Prof. Dave Goulson. We investigate how we can best use our private outdoor space for invertebrate conservation, with the help of thousands of volunteers across the UK and beyond!
Use Study
We are a community group, going out on an ad hoc basis to learn about, identify and record wildlife in the village of Penparcau, west Wales. We have a broad taxonomic range and a broad range of skill levels. We follow CS methodologies for our surveys.
